stamp out the death penalty

A commemorative stamp created for Amnesty International’s 50th anniversary called on the public to help stamp out the death penalty and stand up for human rights worldwide.

In 2011, An Post commemorated the 50th anniversary of Amnesty International with the release of a 55-cent stamp. The stamp, designed by Zinc Design, featured Amnesty’s iconic symbol. The stamp was launched at Dublin’s GPO and unveiled by Sunny Jacobs and Peter Pringle who encouraged support of Amnesty International’s campaign to end the death penalty.

Sunny Jacobs spent 17 years on death row in the United States before her wrongful conviction was overturned in 1992. Peter Pringle, one of the last people sentenced to death in Ireland, was released in 1995 after serving nearly 15 years when his conviction was also overturned. Both went on to become leading advocates for justice and abolition of capital punishment.
