In September 2015, Art for Amnesty and Amnesty International Italy (along with the Italian NGO Insieme Si Può) brought 6,000 activists together to form a 10km long human chain to encircle the iconic “Tre Cime” in northern Italy.
The event, which was organised at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, aimed to raise awareness of the plight of refugees across the world and called on governments to take action. It took place a week before an emergency meeting by European Union leaders to discuss the refugee emergency.
A number of international artists, including Irish rock band U2, musician songwriter Michael Stipe, American illustrator Peter Sís, Iranian actor Nazanin Boniadi, Joan Baez and Patti Smith, among many others, supported the event.
