“I hold a treasure: hands for impasse”
I usually work on stone, pebbles -small or big- that I find: I usually choose them from the ground but sometimes from construction debris. First, there is eye contact, a link is settled. From that moment, I look forward to establishing a dialogue, understanding their abstract condition, and searching in them something that speaks out. It may take days or months to grow this connection, similar to friendship. Then the action starts, like a surgeon I try to carve as little as possible, the most limited amount of material not to hurt the core of the stone. I like to check hardness and resistance against some of my strokes. I use chisels and a hammer, I drill and I sand. It is nothing like modelling from mud or plaster where the sculpture is fully created from scratch. In my case, the sculpture already exists. I feel a responsibility with the original stone, whom in the first place never asked me to intervene on it…, or maybe it did… with the original dialogue we established….!
The piece that I present here corresponds to a series that I made from of a collection a pavement limestone pieces from a private garden in Suresnes, Paris. In this case, I did not find them in their natural form: mankind had already altered their condition to give them a geometrical shape, a flat surface where people walked over for almost a century. The image of this flat surface partly sunken was evocative to me. I imagined a lot of hands holding these stones in order to keep the even flatness of the pavement. A collective effort of anonymous hands.

Earth is the biggest treasure we hold. I continuously try to communicate with Nature, through my work and through the meditative process that comes along.
The Present world is an impasse, let’s put our hands together to walk ease the way.

“Ho in mano un tesoro: mani per l’impasse”
Di solito lavoro su pietre, ciottoli – piccoli o grandi – che trovo: Di solito li scelgo dal terreno, ma a volte anche da detriti di costruzione. Prima c’è un contatto visivo, si stabilisce un legame. Da quel momento, cerco di stabilire un dialogo, di capire la loro condizione astratta e di cercare in loro qualcosa che parli. Possono volerci giorni o mesi per far crescere questo legame, simile a un’amicizia. Poi inizia l’azione, come un chirurgo cerco di incidere il meno possibile, la quantità più limitata di materiale per non danneggiare il nucleo della pietra. Mi piace verificare la durezza e la resistenza di alcuni dei miei colpi. Uso scalpelli e martello, foro e levigo. Non è come modellare con il fango o il gesso, dove la scultura è completamente creata da zero. Nel mio caso, la scultura esiste già. Sento una responsabilità nei confronti della pietra originale, che in primo luogo non mi ha mai chiesto di intervenire su di essa…, o forse sì… con il dialogo originale che abbiamo stabilito….!
Il pezzo che presento qui corrisponde a una serie che ho realizzato a partire da una collezione di pezzi di pietra calcarea provenienti da un giardino privato di Suresnes, a Parigi. In questo caso, non li ho trovati nella loro forma naturale: l’uomo aveva già alterato la loro condizione per dare loro una forma geometrica, una superficie piatta su cui si è camminato per quasi un secolo. L’immagine di questa superficie piatta e in parte sommersa mi è sembrata suggestiva. Ho immaginato molte mani che tenevano.

La Terra è il più grande tesoro che custodiamo. Cerco continuamente di comunicare con la Natura, attraverso il mio lavoro e il processo meditativo che ne deriva.
Il mondo attuale è un’impasse, uniamo le nostre mani per facilitare il cammino.
